My journey to this work began long before I started the business. For years, I lived and worked on farms and homesteads, learning firsthand what it means to care for the land with patience, purpose, and respect. On an 80-acre permaculture homestead recovering from Hurricane Michael, I helped rebuild barns with reclaimed lumber, planted hundreds of trees, built Hugelkultur gardens, restored trails and fences, and created gathering spaces where people could reconnect with nature and one another. Shortly afterward, I found my way to the mountains of Western North Carolina through another homestead project, where I spent months building decks, stairs, raised garden beds, and landscapes nestled among magnificent trees and ferns, along a babbling creek lined with massive boulders. Shooting stars and blue ghost fireflies lit up the nights, framed by the foothills of Southern Appalachia and an old apple orchard. It was there that I met my wife, and where these mountains became home. It was there that I realized I wasn't simply learning how to care for the land - I was discovering the place I was meant to set to my roots - to grow my family, serve my community, and care for the land we call home.
Although my professional background is in exercise science, bodywork, nutrition, and holistic health, I've come to realize that the principles guiding healthy people are the very same principles that guide healthy landscapes. Just as the human body relies on interconnected systems working in harmony, the land depends on healthy soil, thriving mycorrhizal networks, native trees and shrubs, pollinators, wildlife, water, and the countless relationships that sustain life. When each part is supported, the whole ecosystem becomes stronger, more resilient, and better able to flourish.
That understanding is the foundation of Appalachian Roots Landscaping. Whether I'm building a natural stone retaining wall, restoring a hillside, planting a pollinator garden, or creating an outdoor gathering space, my goal is always the same: to cultivate healthy, resilient systems that will continue to thrive for generations. I believe that caring for the land is ultimately caring for our community, because when healthy ecosystems flourish, they provide beauty, nourishment, habitat, and places where people can slow down, reconnect, and feel at home. My commitment is to leave every piece of land healthier than I found it—through thoughtful craftsmanship, lasting stewardship, and genuine care.
